Prescribed Burning Regulations and Safety

Prescribed burning of range land and pastures to control weeds and brush, has become an important, though potentially dangerous, management tool throughout Kansas.  Planning a burn involves determining what to burn, what precautions to take, and understanding safe conditions for a successful burn.  Working with local fire department and law enforcement is crucial.

Safety is of utmost importance -- a safe burn involves planning, skill, and experience as well as knowing safety requirements and state regulations.  To ensure that legal requirements are met, be aware of the state regulations and safety measures as outlined in the publications below.

 L565 --- Prescribed Burning Safety

L664 --- Prescribed Burning Planning and Conducting

L815 --- Prescribed Burning as a Management Practice

Printed copies of these and more are available from your county Extension, Soil Conservation Service, or Wildlife and Parks offices.
